Graduate Student Government
Graduate Student Government is the supreme graduate student governmental body charged with serving and representing all graduate students at the University of Maryland. GSG works to formulate policies promoting and governing the activities and welfare of all graduate students as well as help advise the University administration on issues affecting graduate student life. GSG is also responsible for the allocation of the Graduate Student Activity Fee. GSG is open to all registered and currently enrolled graduate students and meets once every month.

Become a GSG Department Representative
Representatives are voting members of the GSG Assembly (meets once a month) that represent the needs of graduate students. Your department is responsible for selecting representatives and is allowed one GSG representative for every 100 students in the department. Please report new representatives to the GSG Vice President of Legislative Affairs.
Serve on a GSG Committee
Coordinated by the GSG VP of Committee Affairs, there are a number of committees where much of the work of GSG is accomplished. Some of these committees include:
  • Academic Affairs: considers issues related to the academic and professional development of graduate students.
  • Budget and Finance Committee: manages the GSG budget and reviews student requests for GSG funding.
  • Communications: manages public relations and communications activitiy for the GSG.
  • Elections: Manages the yearly GSG officer elections process, and develops policies for representative elections.
  • Graduate Student Affairs: Researches and develops GSG policy on a wide
range of student affairs concerns, including graduate housing, stipends, benefits, fees, unionization, and transportation.
  • Legislative Action: Lobbies for graduate student concerns at the municipal, state, and national level.
  • Minority Affairs: Researches and develops GSG policy on issues of concern to minority students.
  • Social and Sport: Manages social programming for graduate students, and develops GSG policy on intramural and campus sports programs.
  • Ways and Means: Reviews and approves policy proposals and other items for inclusion in the agenda of the monthly GSG Assembly meeting.
  • Ad Hoc Committees: Committees created throughout the year as needed for special tasks.

With the exception of September 3, GSG meetings will be held in the Margaret Brent Room (2nd Floor of the Stamp Student Union). Meetings are on Fridays and start at 2:00 PM and last about 1.5 hours.
