Monuments in Moonlight

Monuments by Moonlight Night Tour

Cost: $15 per person
Location: Washington, DC

Join Graduate Student Life for a night of fun! Take a 2-1/2 hour narrated tour of Washington DC’s most popular monuments under a moonlit sky. Professional guides will provide entertaining stories and historical information and tell you about the spirits who haunt the nation’s capital. This is a great event if you’re new to the area or if you’d like a new perspective of DC.

Tickets are on sale for $15 each ($32 value) for UM graduate students. Graduate students may purchase one extra ticket for a guest. Transportation to the event will not be provided.

Paddle around Potomac

Paddle Around the Potomac
Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 8am-TBA
Meet at Outdoor Recreation Center

Cost: $12 per person
Location: Washington, DC
(No pre-trip meeting)

Join Graduate Student Life and the Outdoor Recreation Center for a view of historic areas of DC from a new angle! We will paddle our canoes around Teddy Roosevelt Island, along the Lincoln Memorial and near Georgetown. We will then break for lunch and a short hike on Roosevelt Island. No prior paddling experience necessary. Transportation will be provided; please bring a bag lunch. Limit one guest per student.

Tickets are on sale for $12 each for UM graduate students.

Sunrise Hike
Friday, May 1st - Saturday, May 2
Depart at 11pm on Friday and return on Saturday (time TBA)

Cost: $12 per person
Location: Old Rag Mountain (Trip will depart from ORC)
(No pre-trip meeting)

Celebrate the spring with a night hike to the peak of Old Rag Mountain in Virginia. We will arrive on the summit on Saturday morning, just in time for sunrise. The hike includes a short section of rock scramble where our trip leaders will spot and assist in your traverse. Hot chocolate and amazing views await you at the summit!

Tickets are on sale for $12 each ($20 value) for UM graduate students. Please note in response to trip popularity and limited spaces, graduate students may purchase only one ticket. Transportation for this event will be provided from campus.

Ragtime

A poor Jewish immigrant sells his "moving picture" books on the street. A wealthy Victorian couple welcomes a runaway into their home. A Harlem jazz pianist turns an issue of justice into a revolution. One by one, their personal journeys come alive as historic figures offer guidance and diversion--among them escape artist Harry Houdini, auto tycoon Henry Ford, famed educator Booker T. Washington, and chorus girl Evelyn Nesbit. Together, their stories celebrate the struggle between tradition and independence… black and white… old and new… all in pursuit of the American dream. Washington DC's Most Haunted Houses Tour

Washington DC is a town full of history, and that history lives on in its buildings and streets.  Please join Graduate Student Life and Washington Walks for an evening tour of Washington DC’s most haunted houses.

Please note that this walk does not include interior visits to any of the buildings featured.

A Bronx Tale

A Bronx Tale tells the story of Calogero Anello, a young boy from a working class family who gets involved in the world of organized crime. As Calogero comes of age, he must struggle with the choice of following his beloved father's values or submitting to the temptations of the life of the Mafia and organized crime. Spirit of Washington DC Cruise

Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay

Graduate Student Life and the Outdoor Recreation Center have teamed up with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a great fall day on the bay. We will board a historic Skipjack sailing vessel and learn about the history of the bay and try our hands at oyster dredging. Afterward we will have some time to explore downtown Annapolis. This is truly a "must do" before you graduate. Tickets are on sale for $10 each ($20 value) for UM graduate students. Transportation will be provided from campus.

Mos Def at the Kennedy Center

Join Graduate Student life for an evening performance by musician, emcee, vocalist, producer, and actor of stage and screen--Mos Def. In his acoustic project, Mos Def will draw from material by Miles Davis, Beyoncé, James Brown, and Gil Scott-Heron. Always bending genres to create his own sound, Mos lithely flows among hip hop, jazz, and soul while fronting his orchestra of savvy musicians. Tickets are on sale for $17 each (value $33.50) for UM graduate students.

About the Graduate Monthly Series

The Office of Graduate Student Life sponsors 1-2 social events each month for University of Maryland graduate students. From museum tours and musicals, to sporting events and hiking trips, these events showcase the best that the DC-Maryland-Virginia area has to offer. Events are either free or offered at a much reduced cost. You can meet other graduate students from across campus, make new friends, and enjoy taking a break from your studies.

HOW TO PURCHASE: Tickets for social events may be purchased online through the link provided in the event description. Those who have registered for and purchased tickets for an event will receive additional information via email.

HOW TO PICK UP PURCHASED TICKETS: Those who have already purchased tickets online may pick up their physical tickets at the Office of Campus Programs in 0110 Stamp Student Union Monday-Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm. You must bring an ID with you. Ticket sales will not be available in person.

WAITLIST INFORMATION: Once tickets for an event sell out, the online registration form will become a waitlist sign-up form. If additional tickets become available, those on the waitlist will be contacted in the order in which they signed up. You will not need to make any payment until you agree to purchase tickets that have become available. Please note: there is no guarantee that tickets will be come available after an event sells out.

ELIGIBILITY: You must be a currently registered UMCP graduate student to participate in a GSL-sponsored event.
You will be required to log in with your directory ID and password; your status as a graduate student will be checked before you will be able to purchase tickets.

GUEST POLICY: You may bring one non-UMD graduate student as a guest.

FORMS TO COMPLETE: When purchasing your ticket online, you will be asked to provide information about yourself and your graduate academic program. Some events will require an additional liability release form.

PAYMENT: Payments must be made by credit card online. Tickets are NOT refundable.
