Multiversity Intergroup Dialogue/Words of Engagmenet Program

Dear student:

   We are inviting you and your organization to participate in an exciting multi-university national research project (a.k.a. Multiversity) on intergroup dialogues and simultaneously earn two (2) credits or incentives. Briefly, Intergroup Dialogue is a face to face meeting between two social identity groups with a history of or potential for conflict. These groups come together for one to two hours a week and have very honest and open conversations that support personal growth and development and allow for greater awareness among members. The dialogues are facilitated by well-trained and skilled facilitators.

     In partnership with nine other universities, two of our Words of Engagement (WE) dialogues are part of the Multiversity national research project: Men/Women and People of Color/White People. Also, we are adding an Intra-Asian dialogue this upcoming Fall semester. As Asian student/organization on campus, we would like you and/or several of your members to join our Intra-Asian dialogue so that we can have meaningful interactions within our Asian community on or off campus.

     Other benefits that come along with joining the dialogue are:

• Becoming a more well- rounded person. This course will help you get along with many types of people and have a better understanding of group communication in different social settings. 
• Receiving a complete campus experience. Meet and network beyond the group of people you already know. Make new long-lasting friendships.
• Showing that you support and promote diversity on our very own campus. We just don’t want a diverse student population; we also want to have diverse interactions with one another.
• Becoming a better informed person. Break stereotypes by learning about others as well as help others break stereotypes about you.
• The best part of all is that it is not demanding on your schedule. The course is less than a semester long for only once a week. There are just readings/discussions/reflections and one final paper (no exams!).

            Men/Women – Wednesdays, 4-6pm (EDPL338)

            Intra-Asian – Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30pm ( EDPL 338/AAST 398G)

African American Male Achievement Program

"From kindergarten through college, many African American males experience a serious stifling of their achievement, aspirations, and pride" (Lee, 2003, p vii). The African American Male Achievement Program will address these issues to empower young African American boys.

The program was adapted based on training modules defined and described in Courtland Lee's book entitled "Empowering Young Black Males—III: A Systematic Modular Training Program for Black Male Children and Adolescents." Dr. Lee's program "offers specific strategies for empowering young African American males to help them achieve optimal educational and social success" (2003, p. ix). A critical part of the program is empowering the adults who support and work with these students, thus the program's focus is on community mentors, parents, and school staff. The modules consist of: one-on-one weekly mentoring sessions, monthly group sessions with all mentors and mentees, parent empowerment workshops, and teacher/school counselor professional development.

The Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education (MIMAUE) at the University of Maryland is looking for a few good Black men to serve as mentors for Black boys at Seabrook Elementary and Charles Carroll Middle School.

MENTOR CRITERIA:

• Concerned about the academic and social challenges facing Black male youth;
• Expressed commitment to helping young Black males;
• Positive insight into being black and male;
• Demonstrated success in personal endeavors;
• A sense of responsibility; and
• A willingness to grow as Black men.
