Many
Fraternities and Sororities at the University of Maryland have been
involved in recycling, sustainability and environmental causes for
years. The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life will support
all our organizations in taking their efforts to the next level.
Over the past few years:
• We provide all University-owned
chapter houses with customized can and bottle recycling containers.
Large steel outdoor recycling containers have been installed around
the rear walkways of all Fraternity Row and Graham Cracker houses.
Off-campus houses that are interested can purchase these same
items for their houses at a greatly reduced price by contacting
the OFSL.
• We provide grease recovery and recycling units on Fraternity
Row. These units will be accessible for use by all 14 kitchens
and their staffs. The grease recovered from these units will be
used in the creation of bio-diesel fulls, like those used the
Shuttle-UM.
As part of their upcoming renovation, units will eventually be
provided to the Graham Cracker as well.
• We are encouraging all of our chapters and executive leadership
to consider and include recycling and sustainability efforts and
education into all of their programs and major Greek-community
events.
• We will work with all our chapters and organizations to
identify ways that we can further support and encourage recycling
and environmental awareness in our programs, community service
events and more.
These efforts are just the beginning
of many that will be happening both within the OFSL and throughout
the Division of Student Affairs. If you have any suggestions for
other areas that this office can support our chapters, please let
us know! |
