LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The Leadership Development Program is designed to give students the opportunity to cultivate skills, build networks, and begin the process of impacting positive change as university, and ultimately global, citizens. The MDLP provides students opportunities to:

  • Develop their leadership potential through greater self-awareness.
  • Carefully analyze their responsibilities and commitments in the context of leadership for the common good and for purposeful change.
  • Learn how leaders and participants mutually shape the environment of student participation options
The Leadership Development Program seeks to provide comprehensive, multifaceted, and cumulative leadership development opportunities and experiences for University of Maryland students.

  • Peer Leadership Council
The Peer Leadership Council (PLC) is a group of undergraduate students who assist the Leadership Development Program in delivering leadership experiences to other students. PLC participation provides an opportunity to serve the campus community as well as to develop and apply personal leadership skills. The practical experience of presenting, training, facilitating, and program planning will be easily transferred to the workplace and community settings. Meet the members of the Peer Leadership Council here. Learn how the participants of the PLC work with other programs of the Leadership Development Program here. This comprehensive program will be dedicated to encouraging and promoting leadership experiences throughout the University of Maryland community.

The Institute offers University of Maryland students leadership development opportunities through skill development and exposure to a multitude of leadership topics. Additionally, the Terrapin Leadership Institute cultivates personal awareness of leadership skills and issues, both of which are vital aspects of everyday life. The Institute is most effective when program participants recognize and build their skills, challenge themselves, and impact positive change within the community.

Open to all students and free of charge, the program is grounded in the social change model of leadership. Workshops and seminars are facilitated by an assortment of faculty, staff, students, and professionals. The General Leadership Track is offered on Tuesdays, and a Service Leadership Track is offered on Wednesdays. See the schedules for more details.
