Jumpstart your involvement in college!
Turtle Camp is a six week leadership experience designed specifically for first-year students at the University of Maryland. It is the perfect opportunity to meet new people and learn more about leadership at Maryland. Sessions are from 5:00 - 6:30 PM on Thursdays and run from October 2nd to November 19th.
Who Can Benefit from Turtle Camp?
Research substantiates the important role that involvement plays both during and after college. Turtle Camp is an exceptional way to make connections early and figure out what it means to be a leader at Maryland. Whether you were involved in high school or not, Turtle Camp is an excellent way to jumpstart your college career.
What Is the Format of Workshops?
Turtle Camp is facilitated by the Peer Leadership Council, a group of trained leadership educators and students at the University of Maryland. The goals of the program are: to enhance each members understanding of leadership, to recognize the different styles of leadership and identify one's own personal style of leadership, to create opportunities to interact with current campus leaders, and to introduce each member to the endless leadership opportunities on campus. The sessions are interactive and designed so that participants really get to know one another and practice what they are learning. Guest speakers from around campus are also featured throughout the experience and in past years have included Dr. Mote (University President), Dr. Clement (Vice President for Student Affairs), and Dr. Marsha Guenzler Stevens (Director of Office of Campus Programs) . Finally, Turtle Camp offers the opportunity for participants to connect with mentors, both faculty and upperclassmen, in the University of Maryland community as a means to continue exploring their involvement and leadership interests.
